El Kahila IOHB*84 was a bay mare born in 1921.
She produced 4 colts and 3 fillies. Of
the fillies only the mare line through Shams IOHB*117
bred on and is in existence today. Shams produced 1
colt and 6 fillies (data presented on this page*). Of the mares, only Shahbaa
EAO*488 bred on. I do have to question the
number of mares that are recorded as not having 'bred on' in the
'early years' of this dam line. Where the horses lost due to the
wars? Or where the records associated with those horses lost? Or
was it merely the case that the owners of these mares had
concerns other than breeding horses? We will probably never know
what happened to all of these mares. The important thing is that the El Kahila dam
line WAS preserved for us through her daughter El Zabia, El Zabia's daughter Shams, and Shams daughter Shahbaa With the appearance of Shahbaa
EAO*488 a grey mare born in 1951, the El Kahila line
was represented by increasing numbers of mares.
Shahbaa and her daughters seemed to take it upon
themselves to make sure that the El Kahila dam line
was well represented! (data presented on this page*).
Mares of the El Kahila dam line
were exported to Australia, Austria, France, Spain,
Russia, etc and, of course, the United States and
Canada. Although the El Kahila dam line was better
represented than ever before as far as number of mares
was concerned, there are not large numbers of mares
in any one country. This means that this dam line is
still not 'secure' in any individual country. If just
a handful mares don't breed on, the dam line can still
be lost in that country. We need to be aware of the rarity of
this dam line when making our breeding decisions, not only in this
country, but in other countries as well.

Rare
Some may have noticed that I haven't even addressed the issue of the dam line within the Al Khamsa and Asil breeding groups. I did not confirm a mare's status as Al Khamsa until she was imported into the US or Canada so I don't know how many of the mares in countries outside of the US and Canada are considered to be AK (or Asil). But let us continue.
Shams SSB (AHR*345908), Sheikaa (AHR*268326), Bint Shahbaa I (AHR*5598), Sohair (AHR*201846), and El Shaymaa (AHR*209421) were imported into the US (see table* below). Of those mares, Shams SSB (AHR*345908), Bint Shahbaa I (AHR*5598), and El Shaymaa (AHR*209421) were considered to be Al Khamsa. It is possible that, one day, the mare Folla HSB*43 will be approved by Al Khamsa and the El Kahila dam line will be better represented through both Sohair and Sheikaa. If that time comes, these two mares will be researched more thoroughly. Because we need the stallions for pure in strain breedings or simply to increase the percentage of the El Kahila bloodline in a pedigree, I will mention that AK Shahm (AHR*104990, CAHR*14945), Rami (AHR*131618), Ibn Alaa Eldin (AHR*177233, CAHR*12679), and Ibn Safinaz (AHR*247122) were imported to the US and/or Canada. I did not research their progeny, but each is a possible source of the El Kahila line.

It seems that * Bint Shahbaa I was determined to follow in the hoofprints of Shahbaa and ensure that the El Kahila dam line is well represented while *Shams SSB (6 female descendants living and not exported) and *El Shaymaa (2 female descendants living and not exported) were not bred/represented as extensively. Much more detailed information about how these mares bred on in the US and Canada is presented on this page There is far too much detail to go into easily, but I will make a few observations. The El Kahila dam line is the only kuhaylan krush dam line which is considered to be both straight egyptian AND al khamsa. This line was also - by chance or intent - often bred to be straight egyptian and/or to stallions noted for their show records rather to stallions that were AK. On some occasions, this has caused mares of this dam line to be bred to stallions that were not AK and in some cases not SE. The addition of *El Nasser to the AK roster increased the representation of this dam line within AK. Of course, I would like to see these SE/AK mares bred to produce at least one female replacement for themselves within their preservation group, but it is not right/appropriate for me to tell other breeders how to make their breeding decisions.
And, finally, a short discussion of the kuhaylan krush horses that are possibly still alive and capable of producing foals. A 'cut off' age of 25yo was chosen although there are mares (and stallions) that can produce past this age as well as those who can not produce past the age of 25yo. This page has a listing of all mares and stallions that are registered with the Arabian Horse Association and have not been identified as deceased or gelded and are 25yo or younger.
The table below has a summary of birth years of horses 25yo or younger. As you can see there are 14 mares born during 1990 or before. This means that 26 mares are younger than 15yo and could easily (we hope) produce one or more AK fillies of the kuhaylan krush strain before they are retired from breeding. With these numbers there is no reason for this strain (and dam line) to vanish if each mare is bred to replace herself within AK and hopefully for just one additional filly to add to the breeding population within this strain/dam line. There are 15 colts/stallions which could be used to produce foals that are pure in strain/substrain. And don't forget the stallions of the *Werdi dam line that could also sire pure in strain foals. It would take dedicated effort to produce foals that are pure in strain for more than one or two generations - but the basis for such a breeding program exists.
